St Georges Day Celebration

Date: 27th Apr 2024 Author: David Stokes

On the evening of Friday 26th April 2024, hundreds of members of Gateshead Scouts got together for our annual St Georges Day celebration.

As well as being the Patron Saint of England, St George is also the Patron Saint of Scouting and our yearly parade and service is an opportunity to reflect on the example of St George.

After a short parade through Whickham, the St Georges Day service took place at St Marys the Virgin church, the lovely parish church in Whickham. During the service there was a chance to learn more about why St George is both the Patron Saint of England and of Scouting, and all of our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Young Leaders and adult volunteers renewed their Scout Promise.

District Lead Volunteer Andrea McGuigan spoke about how we all ‘fight dragons’ in our everyday lives, and how we can all overcome our challenges. Andrea then presented a number of our adult volunteers with long services awards ranging between 5 and 30 years and also presented a number of our leaders with their ‘Wood Badge’, to recognise the completion of their adult training.

The district then paraded on the church green before being dismissed in the late evening sunshine.

Our thanks go to members of 12th Gateshead Scout Group for organising the logistics for this year’s celebration.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
